Protocol for Entering a Home Care Client's Home

This is a sample protocol. Adjust it so it works for your home environment and for what supplies you have available

  1. Watch a handwashing video
  2. Have your direct support staff call before the start of each shift.
  3. During the call, ask staff to report out body temp and answer screening questions.
  4. Use hand sanitizer in car before putting on mask. Touch only the edges of mask and/or the straps.
  5. Instruct staff to enter home as usual, and MIND WHERE THEY TOUCH TO DO SO.
  6. Instruct staff to immediately clean or sanitize what they touched to enter.
  7. Inform staff where they can find the cleaning/sanitizing supply and have this handy by the door, and specify the location
  8. Instruct them to clean/sanitize things like:
    • screen door lever (inside and outside)
    • knob (both inside & outside),
    • entry keypad
    • door jamb
    • side of door
    • anything else they touched to enter the house.
  9. Instruct them to NOT bring in mail (separate protocol for this)
  10. When cleaning/sanitization is complete, go to kitchen to wash hands using hand washing protocol. Here is what a sample hand-washing station looks like.
  11. Instruct staff to follow the handwashing instructions to remind them of the steps -- making sure to also wash their wrists.
